What Is Vaping E-Liquid?
E-liquid is the flavoured liquid used by many vape devices. Unlike cigarettes, vapes do not produce smoke. Typically, when a vape is turned on (and contains enough charge to function), the battery powers the internal system within to heat up the e-liquid - turning it into a vapour.
Many e-liquids contain not only flavourings, but typically nicotine, and what is known as Propylene Glycol and Vegetable Glycerine - alongside other possible ingredients. The ratio of Propylene Glycol and Vegetable Glycerine – or PG and VG as they are also known - will likely impact the vaping experience. For a full list of ingredients, read the e-liquid packaging, which usually provides information from the manufacturer. Vape e-liquids are not risk-free and often contain nicotine, which is addictive.
The balance of PG and VG comprise the basis of some e-liquids. The amount of each substance can vary, and this creates what is known as the ‘VG / PG ratio.’ This ratio partially determines a vaping experience, impacting elements like the taste.
E-liquids are designed to work with a vape’s internal design, and picking the right e-liquid to suit a vape kit or a tank is necessary. For example, some e-liquids may be designed to work with a low wattage kit, whereas others, such as e-liquids with a PG/VG balance of 50/50, are typically designed to work with various devices and wattage ranges.

Different E-Liquids for Different Devices
Ultimately, the type of device you seek out will depend on the vaping experience you are looking for. In turn, the type of device will likely also determine the type of e-liquid that goes inside it. It is important to use the correct e-liquid for the device type - that is to say, the e-liquid going into a vape is compatible with the device in use, or vice versa. If unsure, refer to the manufacturer’s advice.
It is also useful to understand that mixing e-liquids and using incompatible e-liquids can have certain drawbacks, including an underperforming vape. This is because incorrect e-liquid may clog a device’s elements over time.
Depending on the type of device and brand in question, the e-liquid will usually sit inside the vape tank. E-liquid should typically be topped up at the point it begins to run out. Disposable devices, and those that use pod capsules, generally utilise pre-filled e-liquid holders, which slot into the device. These usually do not require refilling. Rather, the disposable vape or pod will likely need to be discarded once the e-liquid inside has run out.
Guidance about the correct type of e-liquid to use is usually provided by the manufacturer. Check the information provided with your device if you are unsure.
Does E-Liquid Contain Tobacco?
Unlike cigarettes, e-liquid does not always contain tobacco. However, some e-liquids may contain this substance. We recommend checking the manufacturer’s information to determine the exact ingredients. Even if an e-liquid does not contain tobacco, it may contain nicotine, which is an addictive chemical found in tobacco. Many e-liquids contain nicotine that has been extracted from the tobacco plant.
How to Store E-Liquid
Sunlight and exposure to extreme heat or cold can impact the performance of many e-liquids, and such temperatures may also contribute to degradation. By storing unopened e-liquid in its original packaging and at room temperature, the product is more likely to last until it is opened.
Devices That Do Not Utilise E-Liquid
There are many smoke-free products available that do not require e-liquid. IQOS HeatControl Technology heats tobacco instead of burning it to deliver the taste of real tobacco - IQOS provides cigarette-like satisfaction.* Studies* showed that the satisfaction of those who switched completely to IQOS is comparable to those who continued to smoke cigarettes. IQOS is not risk-free and provides nicotine, which is addictive.
HEETS tobacco sticks work with IQOS devices. An adult smoker will discover a variety of flavours in the HEETS selection. You can click on the store finder to find where to buy HEETS [Internal link to store locator]. IQOS and HEETS is not risk-free as it contains nicotine, which is addictive.
* 3 month clinical studies conducted in US and Japan with 160 adult smokers each under real conditions (ambulatory).
It is important to know that vapes and other smoke-free products are not risk-free. The best decision any adult smoker can make is to quit tobacco and nicotine use altogether. IQOS devices are not alternatives to quitting and are not designed as cessation aids.
Vape e-liquid is usually an important part of the vaping experience. With such extensive variety, it is worth exploring the continual innovation in vape design. Some devices are becoming more user-friendly, too - making vaping one option for adults who would otherwise continue to smoke.
