How to Change Vape Coils

The coil is an essential component in many vapes, and it plays a vital role in the way the device functions. Typically, this part of a device is designed to be replaced relatively frequently. Of course, this depends on the device, and how you use it, so please always ensure you follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Learning how and when you may need to change the coil on a vape can be a useful part of your vape device maintenance and care routine.

Changing a Coil in a Vape - Some Tips

Ordinarily located within the vape’s tank, the coil typically comprises of a spiral-shaped piece of wire that wraps around the device’s wicking material. In some devices, the coil may then connect to the battery and be kept in place by the atomizer head, the part of a device which is often responsible for heating and vapourising the e-liquid.

As is the case with other components in a vape, when you replace a coil depends on factors, such as the device itself, including how you vape and how frequently you vape. Over time, a coil may begin to degrade and, when this happens, you should consider that you may need to change the vape coil - if possible, in relation to the device you use. It is important to monitor the coil and change it when necessary. Like all vape components, ensuring you maintain the device in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions can help to keep the coil working as efficiently and as it should.

There are some indicators that may offer an indication of coil degradation that you should be aware of. These indicators can help you recognise when to change the vape coil. Watch for weak vapour production, as less vapour than usual can indicate an ineffective coil. Another indication is a ‘gurgling’ sound whilst vaping, which may indicate the coil is being overused - or it could be that the tank has flooded. As vape devices vary, always first consult with the manufacturer of the device if you identify any problems.

Why You Should Change a Coil

If a vape coil is faulty or degrading, a new one might improve the vaping experience. Ignoring the signs of degradation may eventually lead to coil burning out, potentially giving off a burnt taste the next time you vape. Swapping the coil before this time can, for example, prevent damage to the device. When vapourised, some e-liquids deposit a gradual build-up of residue, which can collect around the coil (and the wick). Over time, these deposits can clog the device. That is why it is also worth remembering that cleaning the device regularly may help to reduce the build-up of sticky residue that often comes with daily usage.

How to Change a Coil on a Vape

Every vape is different, so it’s important to check the manufacturer’s guidance before you change your vape coil. A useful starting point is to put down paper towels to catch any excess e-liquid. A few tips are below.

  • Disassemble the vape device to access the coil. Carefully take it apart. You may wish to wrap your device in a paper towel or cloth to prevent getting any e-liquid on your fingers. Drain away any remaining e-liquid from the tank and dispose of it. Your tank should be clear of e-liquid before you can refill it.

  • Remove the coil. Carefully unscrew the old coil, dispose of it correctly, and find your replacement.

  • Replace the coil. Screw in the new coil and add a few drops of e-liquid directly onto it. By giving the new wick time to absorb the e-liquid, it is possible to protect the new coil. This detail can help to prevent the new coil from burning out.

  • Test the vape. Fill the tank with e-liquid and secure it to your device by screwing it in. Then test the device to ensure it is functioning properly.

Coil-Free and Alternative Smoke-Free Devices

You may be interested to know that some smoke-free devices do not use coils at all. It may be worth investigating some of these products that do not require knowledge of how to change vape coils.

Heated tobacco products heat real tobacco instead of burning it. IQOS has a variety of heated tobacco devices to select from. IQOS provides real tobacco taste and satisfaction, and, IQOS emits 95% less harmful chemicals compared to cigarettes.* As IQOS is not a vape, there is no coil, which means there is no need to change a coil.

Important information: It does not necessarily equal a 95% reduction in risk. IQOS is not risk-free.

* ”95% less” represents the average reductions in levels of a range of harmful chemicals (excluding nicotine) compared to the smoke of a reference cigarette. See important information on IQOS.com.

With understanding of how to maintain a vape, you can help to prolong the life of a rechargeable device. While many components may need replacing over time, such devices may offer a smoke-free alternative to cigarettes. The best decision any adult smoker can make is to quit tobacco and nicotine use altogether. IQOS devices are not alternatives to quitting and are not designed as cessation aids.
