How do heated tobacco devices work?

At the heart of heated tobacco devices are sophisticated electronics that heat specially designed tobacco sticks. While cigarettes burn tobacco, a heat not burn device, heats the tobacco to release the real taste of tobacco, without burning it.

Since IQOS devices are battery-powered, they need to be charged regularly, just like you would charge a smartphone. Once the IQOS device is charged and ready for use, a specially designed HEETS tobacco stick is inserted into the device holder. By pushing a button to begin the heating process, a specially designed blade heats the HEETS tobacco stick which produces an inhalable vapour.

Once the experience is over, the used tobacco stick should be removed from the device and disposed of in a bin.

Why a Heat not Burn device is a better alternative to cigarette smoking

IQOS and HEETS tobacco sticks replicate the cigarette smoking experience and are a much better choice for adults who would otherwise continue to smoke. When a smoker takes a puff of a burning cigarette, the temperature of the cigarette rises up to 800°, generating smoke, ash and the majority of harmful chemicals which public health experts agree are the main cause of tobacco related disease. On the other hand, heat not not burn devices heat the tobacco to 350°C to release the true taste of tobacco.

IQOS emits on average, 95% lower levels of harmful chemicals compared to cigarettes. It does not necessarily equal a 95% reduction in risk. IQOS is not risk free.
